The Bund (外滩) – Shanghai's Iconic Waterfront

The Bund (外滩, Wàitān) is Shanghai's most recognizable landmark — a 1.5 km riverside promenade stretching along the west bank of the Huangpu River. Lined with more than 50 magnificent buildings in Gothic, Baroque, Romanesque, and Art Deco styles, it earned the nickname "Museum of International Architecture."
What to See at the Bund
The promenade faces the glittering towers of Pudong's Lujiazui financial district across the river, offering one of the world's most dramatic urban panoramas. The view is spectacular at any time of day — early morning offers a calm, uncrowded experience; evenings after 7 pm light up the skyline in gold and neon.
- Peace Hotel (Heping Hotel) – An Art Deco masterpiece built in 1929, now a luxury Fairmont hotel.
- The Bund 18 – Elegant shopping and dining in a historic 1923 Chartered Bank building.
- Customs House – The iconic clock tower, one of the Bund's most photographed buildings.
- Huangpu River Cruise Pier – Board a river cruise for views of both the Bund and Pudong.
Getting to the Bund
Take Metro Line 2 or Line 10 to Nanjing East Road station (南京东路), then walk east about 10 minutes to the river. The Bund is open 24 hours and admission is free.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer mild weather and clear skies. Evenings are particularly magical when both the colonial buildings and Pudong skyscrapers are illuminated.
