Xintiandi (新天地) – Where Old Shanghai Meets the New

Xintiandi (新天地, literally "New Heaven and Earth") is one of Shanghai's most visited lifestyle destinations — a meticulously restored neighbourhood of shikumen (石库门) stone-gate lane houses transformed into an upscale open-air complex of restaurants, cafés, cocktail bars, boutique shops, and galleries.
North Block (北里)
The pedestrianised North Block is the heart of Xintiandi, where grey-brick shikumen facades disguise chic interiors housing international restaurants (Italian, French, Japanese, Thai), trendy bars, and artisanal coffee shops. The cobblestone lanes fill with a fashionable crowd from late morning through midnight.
South Block (南里)
The South Block features more contemporary commercial development including a shopping centre with fashion boutiques, a cinema, and the award-winning TMSK restaurant known for its hand-blown glass art installation.
Site of the First National Congress of the CPC
Xintiandi is also historically significant — the red building at 374 Huangpi South Road marks the site where the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China was held in 1921. A museum inside is open to visitors and offers important historical context.
Tianzifang (田子坊)
Just 15 minutes walk south from Xintiandi, Tianzifang is a rival arts-and-crafts district with even more labyrinthine lanes, independent boutiques, and café-studios. The two neighbourhoods make a perfect half-day combination.
